Roma – Pear shaped fruit are produced on a vigorous plant. Good preserving and home garden variety. Acid free.
Moneymaker – Large vigorous plants producing globe shaped fruit. This popular plant sets under most conditions making it very popular. Value for money.
Beefsteak – Kidney-bean shape, spreading out to the sides. It has numerous compact seed cavities and the core is practically non-existent. Because of this it holds together well when cut, and so is particularly well suited for slicing and eating raw.
Big Beef – Produces large juicy tomatoes, combined with the old-fashioned beefsteak flavour – very tasty. Plants are multi-disease resistant and produce high yields. Big Beef is the perfect sandwich tomato.
Zola – Medium to large sized fruit, excellent flavour and colour. Determinate bush habit so no stringing or lateraling! Widely disease resistant.
Petula – Best suited to unheated greenhouses or outdoor crops. Medium sized fruit, strong against cracking. Very early maturing. Attractive fruit with good flavour.

Hi there,
Spring is all but here. The coriander is shooting away – what a wonderful time of year for this wonderful herb. A most often asked question at the market is – how do we stop it bolting? The trick is to not let the plant dry out – it is also a cool season herb. During summer I find it is most successful grown in a pot where the moisture levels can be closely monitored. The beans are definitely enjoying the warmer weather and longer day light hours – little bright green shoots are growing all over the plants. We are slowly bringing into the markets seedlings which will be successful in gardens at this time of year. The tomato plants have been seeded and are looking great and are on target to be available early mid October.
Hi there, Spring is really in the air. We have seeded an early crop of squash and also rock melon. Seedlings are now available at the markets…lettuce, spinach, rocket and beetroot to name a few. Phil is seeding various varieties of tomatoes which we hope (weather permitting) will be available mid-October. It is very exciting instead of growing just lettuce as we have in previous years – throughout the property in different stages of development we have pak choy, rocket, spinach, fennel bulbs, watercress, chinese cabbage, radich, beetroot, carrots, potatoes, snowpeas, flat beans, huge amount of herbs, sweetpea flowers. Whew – this is certainly keeping us busy.
We had a huge amount of page views on our facebook page last week…wondering if it was something to do with the Horticulture New Zealand 2010 Conference that was being held?????
Hi there,
How exciting to be ‘hauled’ into the greenhouse to be shown our first crop of indoor tomatoes turning red. What beauties! We will be closely watching their progress. We sampled our new potatoes served with some fantastic gurnard which we bought from the Clevedon Farmers Market – they were absolutely ‘melt in the mouth’. Just another few weeks and we will have them for sale. I spent quite some time in the sweet pea garden last week to discourage a few weeds. The vines are surviving the winter well and hopefully we will have sweet pea flowers for sale in early spring.
How lucky we are – no frosts yet though the short sunlight hours are taking their toll. The snowpeas, spinach, rocket and silverbeet are really enjoying the autumn weather but unfortunately all the other crops have slowed down significantly. The shortest day is not far away and I have a feeling spring will be just around the corner. We have almost finished cleaning up – getting ready for the outdoor crops which will be sown during August.
Fennel bulbs are looking great and we will be bringing these into the markets this week. Let’s hope for fine weather this weekend – its always great to see the horses and model aeroplanes at the Clevedon Farmers Market.
See you.
Jenny
